Clean energy is possible with a magnetic generator thanks to the inner workings of magnets. If you are seriously considering putting together your own magnetic power generator, then an indepth and better understanding of the properties of magnets would probably be considered a good thing if you don’t already know how they work. You might not know it but magnets and what they are made from aren’t always the same. Magnets have been around since the Greeks discovered that lodestone attracted pieces of iron. Children and scientists have both been and continue to be intrigued by the nature of magnets and magnetic fields.

Magnets aren’t all created equal and there are actually three different kinds of magnets. Look in most kitchens around the world and you’ll see on fridges the most typical kind of magnet call permanent magnets. This is by far the most common magnet found today. These magnets create a magnetic field all the time. They never switch on and off and they are always making a magnetic field. This ability is why fridge magnets don’t suddenly fall off your fridge door. Soft or temporary magnets are another magnet variety. The name of this kind of magnet probably gives away that they aren’t always “on”. The magnetic field that they create doesn’t last forever. So when are they considered magnets? Only during times when they are around other magnetic fields do they create their own. It is during these times that they are considered magnets. The final kind of magnet is an electromagnet. The presence of electricity in the wires of electromagnetic magnets creates a magnetic field.

Besides having three different kinds of magnets, there are different materials that can be used in the construction of them. The common fridge magnet is made from ceramic. You will also find these kinds of magnets in many school science classrooms around the world. They are made from iron oxide in a ceramic composite. These kinds of magnets aren’t very strong. Alnico magnets are constructed from aluminum, nickel and cobalt. While this kind of magnet offers a much strong magnetic field than ceramic magnets, they are still not the strongest. The final group of magnets made from rare-earth metal fall into two groups; neodymium and samarium cobalt. You won’t find any magnet stronger than ones made from rare-earth metal

So just how do magnets work? When you point all the magnetic domains in magnets in the same direction, you experience the effect that magnets have. A magnetic domain is basically a small magnet in itself. Usually, the magnetic domains in iron and other magnetic materials aren’t aligned and they cancel each other out. The strength of a magnetic field increases as you align more and more magnetic domains in the same direction. This is why magnets function as they do.

Magnetic generators wouldn’t work without the existence of magnetic fields in magnets. This magnetic field makes the creation of clean home power from magnetic power generators possible. With a better understanding of why and how magnets work, you’ll have a much greater appreciation of making clean home electricity with your very own magnetic generator.
